Aquino First Owner of iPhone 4S
Being a loyal Globe subscriber, President Aquino was given the newest version of the Apple mobile phone by Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala at Malacañang
When the new iPhone 4S was launched a few days ago, thousands of Filipinos lined up to own this new offering from Apple. Unbeknownst to all, the first Filipino to get this much-awaited mobile phone is none other than President Benigno Aquino, III.
The President was given the iPhone 4S by Jaime Augusto Zobel de Ayala, chairperson of the Ayala Corporation which owns Globe Telecom. Ayala personally delivered to Aquino the phone at Malacañang two days before the official Philippine launching.
Because Aquino has been a loyal subscriber to Globe Telecom, the company decided to give him the gift under their loyalty program. This was according to Globe president Ernest Cu who added that the gift did not have any vested interest on the part of the company.
“Even the highest official knows how to make the correct choice in terms of providers,” Cu said upon the release of the newest version of the iPhone.
Aquino has been using the Apple iPhone 3G for two years. According to Cu, the phone was due for replacement as stipulated in the contract the President made with Globe.
In the Philippines, it is only Globe Telecom that had the exclusive right to offer the Apple iPhone to their plan-holders. They have been giving their qualified subscribers the three versions of the phone in the past three years. This agreement of exclusivity has ended this year.
