Pacquiao and Cotto Rematch: Is it Possible this Year?

Because a match between WBC champion Floyd Mayweather and WBO welterweight champ Manny Pacquiao is no longer happening this May, the latter starts to look for other options.

Bob Arum, the Filipino boxer's promoter, is now on the verge of negotiating for a rematch with Miguel Cotto. The problem with this is that issues about weight seems to bombard both parties. While the handlers of Pacquiao want the fight to be below 147 pounds, Cotto wants it to be at 150.

The Puerto Rican boxer who is among the greatest possible opponents of Pacquiao said that he does not want to risk his body again so he is unwilling to accept the fight if it would not go beyond 147 pounds. It can be remembered that Cotto was defeated by Pacquiao on their very first fight last 2009 and the match took place at 145 pounds. Cotto also said that he would accept the challenge for a rematch if it is going to be held at a weight which is comfortable enough for him.

But Pacquiao's team has a difficult time agreeing to Cotto's demands.

“It's hard for me to fight at a higher weight class. Not at 150 pounds. Not even at 149 or 148 pounds,” Pacquaio said during an interview.

With regards to the weight issue, WBC Welterweight Champion, Victor Ortiz, said that Pacquiao has the power to set the tone during the negotiation process. “Manny can do what he wants. He is the champ.” he said.

As of this writing, the team of Cotto is still on the process of making negotiations with Bob Arum. Both parties promise to make a decision about this rematch over the next few weeks.
