Mayweather Cannot Fight Pacquiao
Floyd Mayweather, Jr. has been sentenced three months in jail which will commence on January 6 next year
For fans who dream of seeing eight-division boxing champ Manny Pacquiao clobbering Floyd Mayweather Jr., they may have to wait for a long time.
Mayweather has been sentenced to three months in jail starting January 6 for charges on domestic violence he inflicted on his ex-girlfriend Josie Harries in front of their two children in September 2011.
Due to this turn of events, Mayweather would not be able to fight Pacquiao in a multi-million bout by the first semester of 2012.
“Apparently, he [Mayweather] is out of the picture,” said Atty. Jeng Gacal, Pacquiao’s Chief of Staff in Congress. “Unless a suspension [of the three-month jail sentence] occurs, there’s no way for the fight to push through.”
With Mayweather momentarily out of the scene, Pacquiao and promoter Bob Arum will have to look for other contenders to fight the Saranggani representative. They however who will not bring in as much cash the way Mayweather would. The shortlist of contenders includes Juan Manuel Marquez, Miguel Cotto, and World Boxing Organization light welterweight champion Timothy Bradley. Marquez is clamoring for a fourth rematch with Pacquiao while Cotto wants to be given the chance to prove himself a better fighter.
A Mayweather-Pacquiao fight would bring at least $50 million to the Filipino boxing champ. The last fight he had with Marquez brought him at least $25 million.
Prior to Mayweather pleading guilty of the crime, there was an agreement made that Pacquaio will get a smaller share of the earnings. This was to get Mayweather back to the negotiating table.
The camp of Mayweather could ask for an appeal on the court decision but doing so will only extend the proceedings of the court. It may also pulverize any chance of the fight pushing through in the future.
People say Pacquiao’s boxing career will never be complete without beating Mayweather.
