Next Target: SC Justice Mariano Del Castillo

Although the impeachment proceedings against Chief Justice Renato Corona is not over yet, another impeachment case is brewing against Supreme Court Associate Justice Mariano del Castillo for betrayal of public trust upon finding of probable cause by the House Committee on Justice by a vote of 38-10, despite previous absolution from the charges by the Supreme Court. Undoubtedly, betrayal of public trust is one of the grounds for impeachment, however, the prosecution must strongly establish that plagiarism, as what Associate Justice del Castillo had been accused of, is an impeachable offense falling within the ground relied upon.

As there are no exact words to define betrayal of public trust, the authority to determine it is left to the lawmakers. Nonetheless, it must be emphasized that the House of Representatives is targeting another member of its co-equal branch. More importantly, the integrity of the Supreme Court is in peril. Therefore, it is expected that, through the tedious process of impeachment proceedings, the truth will come out. After what the prosecution has displayed during the first few days of Chief Justice Corona’s trial, the said panel should have learned its lesson. Unpreparedness has no room for another impeachment proceedings, should the same push through, knowing fully well that our country is at stake.
