Who is Johnoy Danao?
Johnoy Danao became popular during the podcast "Good Times: Acoustic" with DJ Mo Twister
Thanks to his podcasts that are free on the internet, Johnoy Danao became more popular in the Philippine music industry.
Danao was formerly a lead vocalist of the band “Bridge” from 2000 to 2004. After the group disbanded, Danao continued his love for music as a solo artist. He recorded original compositions and sang along with Peryodiko’s guitarist, Kakoy Legaspi.
Danao wrote the song “Ikaw at Ako” in 2009 which was used in the independent movie entitled “Labing Labing” starring the late Johnny Delgado and his wife Laurice Guillen.
In December 2010, he released his album entitled “Dapithapon” which contained 12 original compositions that included the songs, “Pare, Mare,” “Ulan,” at “Aking Giliw”.
On March 6, 2011, the first episode of the podcast, “Good Times: Acoustic” aired and Danao was there with DJ Mo Twister. The podcast became popular and so did Danao.
Danao is known for his renditions of songs by Dave Matthews and his originals. He claims he is influenced by the music of Eraserheads, James Taylor, Jack Johnson, Paul Simon, Sting and the Beatles. His song “Ulan” enjoyed radio airplay share and captured the interest of listeners.
He plays both rock and acoustic songs. When asked what type of genre he is into, Danao said he would describe it as “very general”.
When asked what the music industry has in stored for him in the future, this is what he replied.
“I’m hoping that people here in the Philippines would really appreciate us musicians who work really hard for the craft, rather than appreciate what’s popular. So I’m pretty hopeful that in time that would happen. Ganun lang ka-simple. Sana magbago yung thinking ng labels, and sign artists who are really worth it. What I notice is they look for what’s popular. For example, bossa nova becomes popular and they look for bossa nova artists. Novelty songs become popular and they look for those who can make novelty songs. I’m still hopeful that their mindset changes. I’m hopeful that the ones who dictate and contribute the most to the industry would be the musicians who work for their art.”
